Lauren Harrold

Welcome
Welcome to my website! Music has played a prominent role throughout my life, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I grew up around music; my mom sang and played piano, and my uncle played drums in a rock band. At the age of 4, I began playing piano and fell in love with making music. I eventually went on to pick up trumpet, guitar, ukulele, drums, and singing.

My passion for playing eventually led to a new passion: production. In high school, I began writing and recording original compositions. Later, in college, I gained hands-on experience with audio for both the live stage and the recording studio. I formed a pathway for studying music production by combining majors in music and communication studies with a computer science minor. Internships in the entertainment and broadcast industries have given me a wholistic perspective that has solidified my goals and musical aspirations.
Music is a unique aspect of the world and a very powerful tool. It has the ability to bring people together in a world that, at times, can seem so fragmented. I hope to continue creating works that leave a positive impact and spark new ideas for others.

Animated Short, 2017
In the summer of 2017, I had the amazing opportunity to intern in the music production department at Walt Disney Animation Studios where I worked at several recording and scoring sessions for feature films. I also collaborated with the studio interns to create this animated short and composed the score for it.

Compositions
Stormy Sea

An adventurous, pirate-themed score
This piece was featured in the 2018 Nickelodeon Monster Mash.

A piano piece that wanders the boundaries or multiple genres

Electrosse
A composition for live harp and surround sound electronics
My original idea for this piece was to create an immersive electronic soundscape. I had nearly completed its complex, quadrophonic (four-sided) mix when I realized something was missing; it needed a live element. So, I developed a part for harp that would serve to juxtapose the electronic chaos. I wanted to demonstrate that musicality and humanity that can be imputed into electronics. When Electrosse is performed live, four large speakers are positioned around the audience with the live instrument placed in the middle. This piece has been performed at a number of occasions, including its wide debut at the 2018 UNC Department of Music Spectrum Concert.

Day By Day
Take it one day at a time...
This was a more personal song I wrote during my senior year of high school and never actually recorded it until my senior year of college. At those pivotal times of your life, it's easy to stress and get lost in all the changes . This song is about taking it slow and living each and every day to the fullest.

Experimental Sound
*Wear headphones while listening to these for a better experience*

Death of the iPhone
This was an assignment in which I had to record sounds found in everyday life and create a musique concréte piece. It is a bit of a commentary on the fact that we are so often distracted and engrossed in our phones. In result, society is growing louder.
Diddle Project

In this project, I took a 3-second (top) sound clip and turned it into a 2 minute piece (bottom).
Zip n' Cut
This piece is a bit more abstract. My main goal was to experiment with panning to create an immersive, binaural-like experience, perhaps mimicking the journey of a bad haircut.

Fun Stuff
UNC Drumline
2018 Drumline Captain
At UNC, I had the honor to serve the Marching Tar Heels as Drumline Captain. After 8 years of marching band, it's safe to say that band has had quite an impact on my life. From traveling around the country for countless sporting events and learning the importance of commitment, dedication, and time-management with some of my closest friends on campus, I wouldn't trade this experience for anything. This video is from one of my favorite game day traditions: cadences in The Pit.
Jazz Combos
Lullaby of Birdland
Karen Carpenter is one of my biggest music idols. Her groovy drumming and beautiful singing made her a unique and legendary figure not only of her time, but for generations to come. This was my attempt to replicate her marvelous multi-tasking in this classic Ella Fitzgerald cover.
